The idea of "tithing" to a local church is an Old Covenant practice of giving. In the New Covenant, giving is led by the Spirit. It may be more Christ-honoring and Spirit-led to give to meet the needs of a disabled grandmother than to give to a local institutional religious church. This isn't a popular topic in the religious setting among those dependent on your giving for their salaries, but Spirit-led giving is biblical and Christ-honoring, and it is the way to manage your assets, all of which Christ owns.
